How to Make Homestyle Salisbury Steak
Making Salisbury steak from scratch is easier than you might think. A few simple ingredients come together to create tender beef patties, and the same skillet is used to build a rich creamy onion gravy that’s perfect for serving over mashed potatoes.

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and seasonings. Mix gently until everything is just combined, then shape into four oval patties.
Step 2
Brown the patties in butter and oil for about 4 minutes per side. Remove them to a plate while you prepare the gravy.
Step 3
Cook the sliced onions until softened and lightly golden. Sprinkle with flour and cook for 1 minute before slowly whisking in beef broth.
Step 4
Stir in the half-and-half, Worcestershire sauce, Better Than Bouillon, and seasonings. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is rich and creamy.

Becky’s Kitchen Tips

- Don’t rush browning the patties. Those browned bits create the best gravy.
- Browning the patties well creates the best flavor for the gravy.
- Let the onions cook until lightly golden for the sweetest flavor.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, stir in extra broth.
- Taste the gravy before serving and adjust the salt and pepper if needed.
