How to Declutter Your Home Before Winter in 7 Simple Steps

Clean and declutterred living room space

When winter arrives, our homes become the center of daily life. Cozy nights in, warm meals, and family gatherings can be wonderful-but they feel even better in a space that’s uncluttered and welcoming. The good news? You don’t have to do an overwhelming deep clean. With just a little preparation, you can create a winter-ready home that feels both peaceful and practical.

Here are 7 simple steps to help you declutter your home before the cold weather hits.

  • 1. Start with the Entryway: Create a Winter-Ready Welcome
    • The entryway sets the tone for the whole home. If it’s cluttered, everything else feels messy. Begin by putting away summer shoes, flip-flops, and light weight jackets. Replace them with baskets or bins for winter accessories like scarves and gloves. Add hooks for coats and a boot tray for wet footwear. A tidy entryway makes coming home on a snowy day feel inviting rather than chaotic. I’ve personally found if there’s a designated place for items to go your family will utilize it instead of just throwing everything on the floor or all over the house.

  • 2. Rotate Your Closet for Cold Weather
    • Winter clothes take up more space, so it’s important to make room now. Store away shorts, tank tops, and sandals, and only keep the items you truly wear. Donate the sweaters, and shoes that haven’t been used for years or the someday I will fit back into this outfit items. This is the perfect time to donate unused clothing so others can benefit during the colder months. With a simplified closet, you’ll have easy access to bulky sweaters, flannels, and layers without fighting through summer clutter.
  • 3. Simplify the Livingroom for Cozy Nights
    • The living room is where we gather most in the winter-whether it’s for movie nights, reading, or simply relaxing by the fire. Too much clutter can make it feel cramped. Remove excess decor and keep only a few cozy essentials like throw blankets, pillows, and warm lighting. A breathable, simplified living room creates the perfect setting for restful evenings and family togetherness.

  • 4. Declutter the Kitchen Counters and Pantry
    • The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially in winter when hearty meals and baking fill our days. Clear counters of unused gadgets and tuck away summer appliances like ice cream makers or grill tools. Take a few minutes to tidy your pantry, making room for winter staples such as soups, stews, pasta, beans and baking ingredients. An organized kitchen makes cooking warm, comforting meals much easier.
  • 5. Tidy the Bathroom for Comfort
    • Cold weather brings dry skin, chapped lips, and the need for long, hot baths. Toss expired lotions, sunscreens, and medications to free up space. Replace them with winter-friendly items: thick moisturizers, Epsom salts, and cozy towels. A fresh, decluttered bathroom feels like a personal retreat-something especially welcome when the days grow short.

  • 6. Prep Bedrooms for Restful Winter Nights
    • As the Nights grow longer, restful sleep becomes even more important. Swap lightweight bedding for warm comforters and flannel sheets. Clear clutter from nightstands and dressers so your bedroom feels calm and soothing. A tidy, cozy bedroom not only makes sleep more restorative but also turns bedtime into something to look forward to on chilly evenings.
  • 7. Check Storage Spaces: Basement, Garage, Attic
    • Don’t forget those hidden areas! Put away summer gear like gardening tools, bikes, and camping supplies. At the same time, bring out winter necessities such as shovels, ice melt, and snow gear so they’re ready when needed. This is also a great moment to toss or donate items that have been sitting unused for years. An organized storage space means fewer headaches later in the season.

Final Thoughts

Decluttering before winter doesn’t have to be a massive project. By focusing on these 7 steps, you’ll create a home that feels calm, welcoming, and ready for the season ahead. Take it one area at a time, and before the first snowfall arrives, your home will be both cozy and clutter-free-making those long winter nights much more enjoyable.

I will personally be decluttering every room mentioned, supposedly here in the mid-west, where I live the winter is suppose to be crazy cold and snowy this year. Not looking forward to it but when you’re prepared in advance it’s not as difficult to deal with.

So, brew the coffee. put on your favorite playlist , and start small and make room for what will help you and your family get through this coming winter season. By the time you’re snowed in, you’ll be glad you took the time to prepare.
