Crispy Homemade Chicken Wings (Better Than Takeout!)

Introduction

When fall sports season hits, there’s nothing better than a big plate of crispy chicken wings. Whether it’s game day, a family get-together, or just a cozy night at home, these homemade wings are my go-to recipe. They’re baked in the oven (no messy frying required), come out perfectly golden and crunchy, and can be tossed in any sauce you love-from classic buffalo to sweet and sticky.

Prep Time 15 minutes mins
Cook Time 45 minutes mins
Servings: 4 people
Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken wings, separated into drumettes and flats
  • 2 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking oil.
  2. Pat chicken wings very dry with paper towels.
  3. In a large bowl, toss wings with baking powder, salt, and seasonings until evenly coated.
  4. Arrange wings on baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes, flip, and bake another 20-25 minutes until golden and crispy.
  6. Optional: Toss with your favorite sauce (buffalo, BBQ, garlic butter) or enjoy plain with dipping sauce.
  7. YIELD: 4 Servings

Step-by-Step with Photos

Step 1 – Prep the Wings

Pat the wings completely dry. This step helps create the extra crispy skin.

Step 2- Season with Baking Powder & Spices

Toss wings in baking powder and spices for that restaurant-style crispiness without frying.

*You can use premixed seasonings if you have a favorite. Here I used the Kinder’s Seasoning that we like.

Step 3- Bake on Cookie Sheet

Place wings on cookie sheet, try to have them not touching each other.

Step 4- Flip & Finish

Bake, flip halfway through, and finish until golden brown.

Step 5 – Sauce or Serve

Enjoy them plain, or toss in your favorite sauce.

Tips for the Crispiest Chicken Wings

  • Dry is key: Moisture= soggy skin. Blot wings thoroughly.
  • Use baking powder, not soda: Baking powder raises pH and crisps the skin.
  • Want them extra crispy? Broil for the last 2-3 minutes. Watch Carefully!

Flavor Variations

  • Classic Buffalo: Toss with hot sauce + melted butter.
  • Garlic Parmesan: Butter, minced garlic, parmesan cheese.
  • Sweet & Sticky: Honey + soy sauce + sesame seeds

Why This Recipe Works

These oven baked chicken wings are:

  • Crispy without frying
  • Simple Ingredients you already have in your pantry
  • Versatile- toss with any sauce or keep them plain
  • Perfect for game day, parties, or family dinner

Closing

Crispy chicken wings are always a crowd-pleaser, and this easy homemade recipe means you don’t have to order takeout to enjoy them. Try them for your next gameday, family night, or anytime you’re craving something crunchy and delicious. If you make them, let me know how you served yours- buffalo, BBQ, or something new! Enjoy!
