Old fashion country gravy served over homemade biscuits

Sausage country gravy is one of those simple recipes that every home cook should know how to make. It’s hearty, comforting, and comes together with just a few basic ingredients.

This is the way I make it at home – nothing fancy. just good sausage, flour, milk, and a little seasoning.

Serve it hot over homemade biscuits for a classic breakfast that always satisfies.

Tips for Good Country Gravy

A few simple things make all the difference:

  • Let the flour cook briefly in the sausage before adding milk. This prevents a raw flour taste.
  • Add milk slowly while stirring so the gravy stays smooth.
  • Adjust the thickness by adding a little more milk if needed.
  • Don’t forget to season well with salt & pepper.

Good gravy is simple, but it does need a little attention.

Servings: 4
Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pork sausage
  • 4 Tablespoons butter (optional if sausage is lean)
  • !/4 cup flour ( add a little more if needed)
  • 2 cups milk to start (add more for desired creaminess)
  • Salt & Pepper, to taste
  • All-purpose seasoning salt (optional)

Method

  1. Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking into small pieces as it browns.
  2. If the sausage is not very greasy, add the butter and allow it to melt.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir well so the flour coats the meat.
  4. Cook the flour mixture for about 1-2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
  5. Slowly pour in about 2 cups milk, stirring constantly.
  6. Let the gravy simmer until thickened. Add more milk as needed to reach your desired consistency.
  7. Season with salt, pepper, and seasoning to taste.
  8. Serve over hot fresh biscuits.

Notes

If the gravy becomes to thick, simply stir in a little more milk.
For extra flavor, add plenty of freshly cracked black pepper.
