Tips for Good Country Gravy
A few simple things make all the difference:
- Let the flour cook briefly in the sausage before adding milk. This prevents a raw flour taste.
- Add milk slowly while stirring so the gravy stays smooth.
- Adjust the thickness by adding a little more milk if needed.
- Don’t forget to season well with salt & pepper.
Good gravy is simple, but it does need a little attention.

Method
- Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking into small pieces as it browns.
- If the sausage is not very greasy, add the butter and allow it to melt.
- Sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir well so the flour coats the meat.
- Cook the flour mixture for about 1-2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in about 2 cups milk, stirring constantly.
- Let the gravy simmer until thickened. Add more milk as needed to reach your desired consistency.
- Season with salt, pepper, and seasoning to taste.
